Immanuel Kant and the Synthesis of Empiricism and Rationalism

Abstract

In the history of philosophy, a prolonged debate in epistemology can be observed between empiricism and rationalism. This conflict reaches a point of resolution in the works of Immanuel Kant. He establishes that both of these opposing doctrines are partly true and partly false. By critically examining them, he proposes a new perspective on the origin of knowledge. However, the question remains: on which specific points does he agree with empiricism and rationalism, and where does his position differ from both? In particular, this paper aims to highlight his points of agreement and disagreement with rationalists and empiricists, focusing on issues such as concepts, intuition, the source of knowledge concerning matters of fact, the content of a third type of knowledge beyond knowledge concerning matters of fact and the knowledge concerning relation of ideas.
