Abstract

Social media has become one of the most influential technological developments of the twenty-first century, transforming the way individuals communicate, form relationships, and construct their identities. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have created new digital spaces where social interactions occur beyond traditional physical boundaries. While these platforms provide opportunities for communication and community building, they also raise sociological concerns regarding identity formation, social comparison, and the nature of interpersonal relationships. This paper explores the sociological impact of social media on social relationships and identity construction in contemporary society. Through a review of existing literature, the study examines how social media reshapes communication patterns, influences self-presentation, and affects social interactions. The analysis highlights both positive and negative consequences of social media use, including enhanced connectivity, increased social capital, and potential issues such as social isolation and identity pressure. The study concludes that social media plays a complex role in shaping modern social structures and emphasizes the need for further research and responsible digital engagement.
