The horticulture sector plays a pivotal role in the economy of Himachal Pradesh, offering livelihood support to a significant portion of the rural population, particularly in districts like Shimla. The success of various government initiatives and programmes in promoting horticulture largely depends on the awareness and participation of horticulturists. This study aims to assess the awareness level of horticulturists in Shimla district regarding the policies and schemes implemented by the Government of Himachal Pradesh for the development of horticulture. Using a mixed-method approach involving structured interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions with farmers across different blocks of Shimla, the study explores the extent of awareness, sources of information, and perceived accessibility of these schemes. Findings indicate significant gaps in knowledge dissemination, with many farmers either unaware of or lacking clarity on key government schemes. Factors such as education level, access to extension services, and proximity to urban centres were found to influence awareness. The study underscores the need for improved information delivery mechanisms, targeted outreach, and capacity-building initiatives to bridge the awareness gap and ensure that policy benefits reach intended beneficiaries. The insights from this research can inform more effective policy implementation and extension strategies in the horticulture sector of Himachal Pradesh.
