Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive assessment of India’s comparative advantage in agricultural exports from 2001 to 2023, employing the Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) index. By analysing ten major commodities, the research offers a nuanced understanding of India’s strengths and vulnerabilities in the global agricultural trade landscape. The results indicate that India has consistently exhibited a strong and sustained comparative advantage in rice, spices, sugar and honey, reflecting its dominant position and deep-rooted expertise in these sectors. Conversely, commodities such as fruits and vegetables, pulses, tea, coffee and cashew reveal comparatively weaker competitiveness, highlighting challenges in quality, value addition and market penetration. These findings underscore the critical need for India-focused policy interventions, including enhanced value addition, adoption of modern agricultural technologies, robust supply chain and infrastructure development, and strategic market diversification. By addressing these commodity-specific gaps, India can not only safeguard its existing export leadership but also expand its global footprint, strengthening its role as a key player in international agricultural trade and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
